I used to HATE writing emails.
I thought, “What copywriter in their right mind would make email marketing their specialty?”.
“I mean, do people EVEN READ emails anymore?”.
And don’t get me started on what I used to think about sales copy… 😲 😳
But things have changed significantly, and I’ve seen the light.
I’m now a card-carrying member of the ‘Email-is-the-best-thing-you-can-do-for-your-business’ Brigade.
Because the truth is, email marketing has completely changed mine.
>> It’s allowed me to step into my voice.
>> To connect more meaningfully with my clients and potential clients.
>> To provide deeper value.
And of course, to make WAY more sales.
That’s absolutely what it can do for you too.
But if any of these 7 things are happening for you right now, it’s definitely time to up your email game:
1. You’ve heard email is a game-changer, but you feel completely mystified when people talk about “building their list”.
2. You’ve got a list, but you’ve emailed them once in about three years and you’re thinking it might be weird and a little #awks to send something now…
3. You’ve got a list of 200 people (or fewer) so you think “it’s not worth it” to keep in touch with them regularly.
4. Your open rates are often lower than 25%.
5. No one EVER buys from your emails.
6. You can’t get into a consistent rhythm with your emails. Sometimes you’re emailing twice a week, other times it’s twice a quarter…
7. You just don’t like writing the damn things. Gah!
Ok, so I recorded a video for the people who want to know a bit more about the practical side of email here (we’re talking open rates, click-throughs, and email platforms).
But let’s dive into some of the other stuff right here.
Because when done right, email can help you create genuine connections with your ideal clients so you can serve them on an even deeper level.
And, just like in real life, creating genuine connections requires vulnerability.
You can’t do that by sending emails about the features and benefits of your product or program.
You need to tell stories about you and your experiences that offer insights and parallels for your customer.
This means: don’t be afraid to get personal.
People want a window into your world.
Some of the highest converting emails I’ve written for clients (or written with my clients) have been deeply personal accounts of their struggles with things like food, relationships and motherhood.
Your customers also want to connect with people ‘like them’, which is why case studies and testimonials work so well in emails and on your sales pages or website.
This is because hearing someone else tell their story allows you to connect to your own subconscious stories.
You see yourself in their pain and in their triumph.
I talk more about connecting with your clients and developing your ‘true’ voice in this Facebook video.
Check it out and let me know what you think.
